2017 Betway World Cup of Darts – Day One

Today saw the start of the Betway World Cup of Darts.  The event, first held back in 2010, has since become a firm favorite with audiences worldwide.  Apart from the inaugural staging, which was held in England, the tournament has made its home in Germany.  This year, an incredible 32 nations will be represented.

Once again, the United States is represented by Darin Young and Larry Butler.  Young has played in all six (there was no event in 2011) events, while Butler made his debut in 2013, and has been a fixture ever since.

The Americans open their account tomorrow (Friday), when Darin and Larry take on the Italian pairing of Daniele Petri and Gabriele Rollo at 8pm local time (2pm Eastern/1pm Central).  The victors will take on the winners of the Netherlands/Czech Republic clash.  Should it turn out to be a meeting of the Americans and Dutch, it will give Young and a chance of revenge against Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld; the same four went head-to-head in the first round of the 2015 event, with the Dutchmen advancing by a score of 5-2.

Big shock of the night was the 5-2 defeat of top-seeded Scotland (Gary Anderson and Peter Wright) by Singapore’s Paul Lim and Harith Lim.

Format for the first round is straight doubles, best-of-nine legs.
