William Hill World Championship – Christmas Break Update
With just four second-round matches to be completed, the William Hill World Championship heads into the Christmas Break. The action at the PDC’s flagship event resumes on Wednesday.
Since American hopes faded with Willard Bruguier’s sad demise a week ago, there have been some fantastic darts thrown, and several big upsets.
From an American point of view, it was great to see Paul Lim still turning it on, even if he is now representing his native Singapore! After a routine victory in his preliminary round, Lim sh0ok the darts world with a superb victory over #30 seed, Mark Webster. Unfortunately, Paul couldn’t keep it going against Gary Anderson, but came oh-so-close to recording a second World Champ nine-darter.
While Anderson, along with Mensur Suljovic, Phil Taylor, Michael Van Gerwen, and Peter Wright (just the one match so far) managed to survive the pre-Christmas fun and games, the three remaining Top 8 seeds weren’t quite as lucky. Seventh and eighth seeds, Adrian Lewis and Dave Chisnall, slumped to first match defeats against Vincent van der Voort and Kevin Munch, while 4th seed, the highly-fancied Daryl Gurney, lost his round two clash tonight against John Henderson. The unseeded van der Voort also accounted for the scalp of #25 seed, Steve Beaton.
The players who have posted a brace of 100+ averages so far are Van Gerwen, Raymond Van Barneveld, and #20 seed Rob Cross. Van der Voort is joined in the T16 by fellow non-seeds Dimitri Van den Bergh, Steve West, and Keegan Brown, while we are guaranteed at least one more non-seed with Munch facing Toni Alcinas on Wednesday afternoon.
