2018 Winmau World Masters – Day One
After the encouraging performances in yesterday’s Lakeside Playoffs, no American was able to advance to Day Two of the World Masters.
Tom Sawyer produced the best result for the men, winning his first two matches before losing to Finland’s Paavo Myller in the fifth and deciding set. Sawyer had previously disposed of Ian Jolly (Scotland) and England’s Jack Vincent. Robbie Phillips and Joe Chaney both safely negotiated their first rounds, but fell short next time out. Larry Butler, Joe Huffman, Kevin Luke, and Tyler Burnett all lost their openers.
Sandy Hudson and Melissa Jalbert were both looking good, and reached their Group semi-finals before dipping out with identical scorelines. Melissa did have the consolation of posting a superb career-best 12 dart leg, though! Stacey Pace started in fine style with a fine victory over Canada’s Danna Foster, but lost in the seventh leg to Trish Kidd (England). Lisa Ayers and Debbie Ivey came close, but like Stacey, lost tie-breakers.
For the youths, Buster Graves and Brendan Mills reached Round 2, but then had toughies against experienced Europeans. Ireland’s Cian Fitzpatrick bested Buster while Brendan was beaten by German Tobias De Vrieser. Jacob Demers kicked off his day against yet another youngster on the seemingly never-ending Dutch youth conveyor-belt, Kevin Lasker, and Lasker it was who advanced. The last American to hit the board today was Aaja Jalbert, who squared off against Belgium’s Femke De Vuyst at 3.30pm (local time). Aaja’s Masters debut was very impressive indeed, and she stormed to a nice 4-2 victory. An hour later, the 2018 ADO National Champion faced Millie Hooper, but it was the English girl who moved on, eventually reaching the semi-final.
