The 2020 BetVictor World Cup of Darts started today in Salzburg, Austria, featuring 32 nations.

The USA were represented by Chuck Puleo and Danny Lauby. One half of last year’s team, Puleo also appeared in the 2019 William Hill World Championship, but Lauby was making his PDC debut after a string of impressive performances in CDC events.

The Americans faced the home nation of Austria in the first round. The experienced pairing of Mensur Suljovic and Rowby-John Rodriguez were seeded 8th, and sadly for Puleo and Lauby, their experience proved crucial. Despite a battling performance from Chuck and Danny, it wasn’t enough to prevent an Austrian victory by a score of 5 legs to 2.

Of the eight seeded teams, two fell at the first hurdle – both Irish teams. The Republic of Ireland went down 5-2 to Australia, and Northern Ireland lost to an impressive display from Canadians Jeff Smith and Matt Campbell.

The event continues tomorrow (Saturday).
