Jeff Smith’s quest to lift the bet365 US Darts Masters came to an abrupt halt as multi-World Champion Michael van Gerwen cruised to an 8-0 triumph in the final. While not at his imperious best, from his first throw of the match – a superb 180 – the Dutchman was in total control.

It was a disappointing end to the day for Smith, who had earlier produced a couple of scintillating displays to see off the efforts of Nathan Aspinall and Luke Humphries.
