2024 Lakeside World Championship – Days 4-6

Day Six at Lakeside brought mixed fortunes for the two remaining Americans. First on this afternoon was Florida legend, Paula Murphy.

Paula was facing #6 Seed, Aletta Wajer. Things looked good when the reigning Cleveland Extravaganza and Charlotte Open Champion checked out from 40 with her opponent still on 88. This obviously didn’t deter the Dutch girl, who bounced back to take the next three legs and the set.

Wajer won the first leg of Set Two, but this one went in total reverse to the first, with the American taking the next three. With Murphy seemingly in the ascendency, our hopes were high, but Wajer kicked it up a notch. She wired a 170 out for a 12-darter first leg, but finished next turn. A 180 helped capture the second, and an opening salvo of 100, 140, 81 set her up to take the match.

That left Jason Brandon. Six days into the event, the man from Tennessee finally got his darts out of their case! Hannes Schnier roduced some good stuff in his opener, but he Virginia Beach Classic titlist was quickly into his stride, wrapping up Set One in straight legs.

That consistency remained in the second, and despite the Austrian getting on the scoreboard third leg, it was soon 2-0. A nice 13 (140, 140, 57, 140, 24) kicked off Set Three, and two legs later, Jason Brandon was in the Top 16.

After such a long wait for his first appearance, Brandon is up again tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon against Belgium’s Sybren Gijbels.

Elsewhere, former ADO hero Paul Lim booked his place in the Top 16 with a hard-fought win over #7 seed, Kai Fan Leung, while #4 seed Brandon Weening fell in straight sets against Shane McGuirk. On the distaff side, Beau Greaves saw off Kirsi Viinikainen, while Lerena Rietbergen sent Third Seed, Rhian O’Sullivan packing.
