2024/25 Paddy Power World Championship – Days 1 & 2

The Paddy Power World Championship kicked off last night with a relatively uneventful session. Reigning Champ Luke Humphries started his title defence with a solid 3-0 win against Frenchman Thibault Tricole, but perhaps the biggest talking point was Keane Barry’s 3-1 triumph against Kim Huybrechts.

Highlight of today’s afternoon session was Jermaine Wattimena’s convincing straight-sets victory against James Wade. The Dutchman dropped only two legs.

American focus this evening was on Texan Leonard Gates, who faced a tricky opener against Scotland’s Cameron Menzies. It didn’t take long for ‘Soulger’ to make an impact, clinching the first set in style! Impressive checkouts of 138, 120, and 85 (on the bull) left Menzies stranded.

The first four legs of the second set all went with the darts, but the Scot chose the right time to hold the throw, and the fifth leg tied the score. Nice outs of 66 and 76 set Gates up nicely, and he took the third in straight legs. Set 4 went to a fifth-leg tie-breaker, but this time, ‘Soulger’ prodded in a nicely-timed 122 finish to advance to the second round. He’s up again last game Wednesday evening against Nathan Aspinall.
