2025 Betgoodwin WSD Championship – Days 1-3
We had to wait until the third day to see Leonard Gates take to the Circus Tavern stage, but it was well worth the wait! Against Mike Huntley, ‘Soulger’ overcame a rocky start to run out a winner by three sets to one.
The first set saw all legs going with the darts, which meant that it was the Welshman who went a set up. A nice 15 to break serve in leg 4 of the second set tied the score. The man from Texas then kicked it up a notch to take the third 3-0 in legs of 16, 14, and 11 (180, 140, 95, 86).
Gates opened the fourth set with another 15, only to see Huntley strike back with legs of 14 and 15. When his opponent missed three at 40 to take the set, Gates stepped up and checked out from his remaining 21. One more leg – which included three tons and a 140 – and the American was in the quarter-finals, where he faces England’s Graham Usher.
The other quarters throw up some interesting clashes. Reigning World Champ and Top Seed John Henderson meets Derek Coulson, with the victor there taking on the winner of the Gates/Usher clash. In the bottom half, there is an intriguing match between two former Embassy World Champs, Richie Burnett and Steve Beaton. The line-up is completed by the all-Scottish tie between Robert Thornton and Ross Montgomery.
The event concludes tomorrow (Saturday), and live scores are available from DartConnect here
