Leonard Gates’ quest for his first World Championship ground to halt against England’s Graham Usher at the quarter-final stage.

After losing the first leg, ‘Soulger’ hit back in style to win the set with legs of 13, 14, and 16. Things looked good as the American raced into a 2-0 lead in the second set. Then, the tide turned as Usher won the next three to make it 1-1.

Next set, it was the Englishman who pocketed the first two legs, before the man from Texas levelled the set. In the decider, Usher had the darts – and it proved vital as he needed just five turns to clinch the set. In the fourth, Gates went 2-0 up. Legs of 14 and 13 squared it up. Throwing first, Gates was down to 82 after just nine darts, but it was all to no avail. Nine darts later, he still had 8 remaining, and it was all over.

Usher then beat Derek Coulson 3-0 in the semi-final. In the final, he faced Scot Ross Montgomery, who had disposed of Robert Thornton and Steve Beaton in his previous two matches. Looking to continue Scotland’s fine record in this event, it was Montgomery who lifted the title by a 5-1 scoreline.
