2024 Lakeside World Championship – Day 9

The eagerly-awaited clash between Jason Brandon and Paul Lim sadly fizzled out as the American struggled on doubles. The pair were evenly matched all contest, but when it came down to clinching the legs, it was Lim’s clinical finishing that made the final result appear a lot more one-sided than it actually was. Brandon needed just 15 darts to secure the first leg of the match, but it was 15 more legs before he again reached a winning double.

I hesitate to go into all the gory details as it would serve no useful purpose. Suffice to say, for 70-year-old Paul Lim to reach the final of the Lakeside World Championship -42 years after his debut here – is a monumental achievement. There, he will face Ireland’s Shane McGuirk, who produced another brilliant display to reach tomorrow’s final.

Not the way we wanted Jason Brandon’s week to end, but let’s be honest; he showed great form over the week, and he totally deserves to be competing at the top level. Sure, this will hurt, but he will be back, stronger than ever. Jason is a credit to himself, and the sport we love.

Prior to the Brandon-Lim tie, the finalists for the other events were confirmed. It should be noted that, in stark contrast to the Men’s Final featuring a 70-year-old, the Women’s Final is between 20-year-old Beau Greaves and Sophie McKinly (18)!
