2019 WDF World Cup – Friday Review
The quest for American glory in the team events came to an abrupt halt as both men and women suffered first round exits on Friday. After the heroics of the round-robins, it was a disappointing way to finish the week.
The women, after impressive victories over teams like Finland and the Netherlands, would have been expected to overcome South Korea, but it was not to be. Missed doubles early on left them chasing, but a brace of wins from Robin Curry kept them in contention, and were just one down after seven legs. Sadly, they were to lose the last five legs, again due largely to poor finishing.
The men too suffered from early struggles against a Hong Kong team who impressed in the round-robin. After Joe Chaney kicked off with a win we lost the next four legs. Three points out of the next four gave us brief hope, but led superbly by an unbeaten Paul Lim, it was Hong Kong who advanced.
At the end of the day, Hong Kong were left to face Wales in the Men’s final, while the Women’s final will be between England and Australia. Both finals will be played tomorrow (Saturday).
